The Puff. Guy de Maupassant.
A small but very bright story about human meanness, selfishness, snobbery and hypocrisy.  Several rather wealthy and respectable residents of a French town captured by the Prussian army set off on their way to another city.  But the winter road is difficult and the journey is delayed.  Unprepared for such a turn of events, travelers begin to experience "terrible" suffering from hunger, but one of their fellow travelers comes to their aid - a woman of easy virtue nicknamed Puff.  And if earlier they tried not to pay attention to it and looked with contempt, then after the appearance of a magic basket with food and drinks, the attitude of travelers changes dramatically.  Unfortunately, this manifestation of hypocrisy will occur more than once, because when it comes to self-interest, it is not at all difficult to forget about class differences and enjoy all the benefits of the situation.  But as soon as the threat is passed, everything immediately returns to normal, and all these "well-bred and worthy" people again look at Puff as an inferior creature and try not to notice her at all.  As a result, the most noble, generous and respectable character in this story is the fallen woman!
